Trauma & PTSD

What is Trauma?

Trauma is an emotional, psychological, and physical response to a traumatic event, such as accidents, natural disasters, abuse, loss, and violence. The impact of the distressing event causes long-lasting effects on a person’s brain, body, and mental and emotional well-being.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after exposure to a traumatic event. It manifests through symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance, impacting your daily life.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) refer to various stressful or traumatic events that occur during childhood. These experiences can include abuse, neglect, household dysfunction, or other challenging circumstances. ACEs have been linked to a range of physical and mental health issues in adulthood.

Complex Trauma involves prolonged and repetitive exposure to traumatic experiences, often in the context of relationships where safety and trust are compromised. It can lead to a variety of emotional and psychological challenges.

How does therapy help?

Therapy provides a nurturing space for your healing journey. Here's what you can expect in the therapeutic process:

  • Safe and Supportive Environment: In therapy, you'll encounter a confidential and empathetic space where you can share your experiences, emotions, and thoughts without judgment.

  • Insight & Understanding: In therapy, you’ll explore with your therapist how your traumatic experiences throughout your lifetime have shaped your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about yourself and the world around you.

  • Trauma Processing: Therapists use evidence-based approaches such as EMDR and ART to help you process and make sense of your traumatic experiences. This can provide relief from the emotional burden.

  • Emotional Regulation: You'll learn strategies to manage intense emotions and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

  • Healing and Resilience: Through therapy, you'll work on healing and building resilience, empowering you to rebuild your life and develop a positive outlook for the future.
